Your Questions About Dog Care

Mary asks…
What’s the cheapest and most hassle-free way to have my dog taken care of while I’m on vacation?
I’m going on a trip in two weeks and will be gone for two weeks. I could ask one of my relatives, but they’re 3 hours away and don’t really want to drive there if I can avoid it. I might try asking co-workers, but I don’t want to hassle people. I really don’t want to use a boarding or kennel service, especially since we’ll be gone for so long, and they’ll end up charging an arm and a leg. Any good ideas?
P.S. We’re flying over to Spain, so taking the dog with us is not an option.
Does anyone know of any cheap boarding services in New Jersey (Monmouth area).

Dog Care Expert answers:
Call around to different Vets that do boarding. I’ve boarded my dog in Texas and Oklahoma. The cost was $9-$13 dollars an day and some give a discount if you bring your own food for the dog.
I also request my dog be kept in a dog run because she is an active dog.
Having her kenneled assures me she is being well taken care of by experienced care takers and her vet.
My dog loves it.. She gets to see and bark with other dogs.
They also bath and groom her before we pick her up.(for a charge).

John asks…
What should I name my dog training service?
I train dogs and help people find the breed that suits their lifestyle. I give information on good locations to obtain a dog [breeder, shelter] and how to care, etc. But this service is mainly about training and pet finding.

Paul asks…
What do they do with dogs at places like Petsmart day care service?
We’re moving in a few days and we don’t want our dog to be in the way so my mom is gonna leave him at Petsmart for the day to get groomed and also to stay there until we’re done moving. But I’m a bit skeptical about it. I really hope they don’t just stick him in a crate for 8 hours and make him miserable, but my mom already made the appointment.

I would also go there ahead of time and check it out in person. Looks like the dogs are allowed play time with the other dogs and they have a nice little room where they stay, not in a crate. They even have a special “relief” room.

George asks…
How do I, a college student, get financial assistance for the care of a service dog?
I have Borderline Personality Disorder, Schizoaffective Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Severe generalized anxiety disorder, and clinical depression. After many years of trying many different forms of psychiatric help (talk therapy, medication, hospitalization, etc.), a professor suggested that I try a service animal.
I think it’s a good idea, I just need a way to pay for its food, general care, and veterinary bills. Does anybody know of any grants, scholarships, or financial assistance programs where I can apply for financial help?

Dog Care Expert answers:
I’ve never head of a way to get financial assistance to care for a service dog.
It is your choice to use a service dog instead of using other assistive devices. Also, there is more to it than just food, general care, and veterinary bills.
It takes 18-24 months to train a service dog. That means that if you start with a puppy, you have to pay for training devices such as puppy pads for household accidents, a crate, toys, frequent vaccinations, training classes for socialization, basic obedience, and advanced obedience. Even if you think you can train the dog all on your own, you still need to attend some classes with it so that you can practice what you have taught your dog around lots of distractions…distractions that are plentiful in such classes. You also need to buy gear such as vests/capes/harnesses, leashes, collars, bags for picking up poop, etc.
A service dog is expensive and it is assumed that if you choose to use one, you are also choosing to pay the costs that go along with using one.

Michael asks…
I work full time – how can I keep a dog as pet?
I am sure I am not alone in this problem.
I love dogs. I stay in a HDB flat, and would love to keep a small-sized dog as pet. The problem is, I work 5 days week. By the time I go home, it will be about 8 p.m.
How can I keep a dog? Would the dog be scared/lonely? Is there any dog-care service, or pet care center? Does anyone has similar experience to share?
My friend keeps discouraging me from taking on one, but I am sure there is a way out.

Dog Care Expert answers:
Well, most dog owners work so I know you may feel guilty, but truth is the dog is still better off with you working full time than say in a shelter for his life. As long as you exercise the dog enough(even small dogs), before and/or after work, he’ll be happy during the day, he’ll be sleeping mostly lol.
I have a crazy schedule, my goal is to walk my dogs 2 hours a day but sometimes that doesn’t happen. But dogs are happiest with consistency and on schedules. They know when it’s walk time or play time and what type of play even lol
on the weekends I dont work and i spend several hrs at the parks including a fenced in dog park. My dogs are happy. I took them to puppy obedience class once a week and when i get more money i want to take them to an agility class for fun/exercise/obedience
Not sure why your friend keeps discouraging you if you want one and love them. Is she a big animal lover? Or jealous?
Whatever the case is the dog is better off in your home than no home. (or an abusive one)
you should probably not get a terrier though, since they cant entertain themselves very good, and are so energetic even after hours at the park mine is trotting around trying to find something to do.
Hope that helped any. I think you should get a little dog.
Oh and there are dog walking services and pet cares, you maybe can find one on dogster.com and dogfriendly.com
My veterinarians has a doggy day care so you can try calling around local vets, if thats what you want to do
