Your Questions About Dog Care

Ken asks…

What is the best Health insurance/ Vet cover policy for dog in Australia?

If anyone has any experience of purchasing these policies, good or bad, please let me know! I know there are several, and if you think they are worth buying, a contact number for your favourite company would be great – thank you
(and yes, this is in the pets section too!)

Dog Care Expert answers:

I would talk to your veterinarian. They will recommend an insurance policy. Most vets in the US will recommend carecredit.

Lisa asks…

Why did the relationship with China start going sour after the olympics? have they?

Anyone care to give a non biased summary? I don’t really care about people’s opinions btw(most of the time biased)…just the facts, but I’m hoping a semi-expert can provide some reasoning or a summary. Here are some random facts I know not in any order.

Youtube was blocked following a video of tibetan violence. Police beating up people, police may not have been real police. Youtube has been blocked since. 2008 I think.

Most views on the Tibet issue are heavily slanted. They are either oppressed victims or trying to revolt. Both sides usually do not have all the facts. Most people know nothing about history and have a biased perspective on it. (which imo is why history repeats itself, maybe it’s the really thick books with the rather boring information surrounding the boringly told stories. Leads people to prefer sensational stories from the media)

China claims Dalai Lama to be behind the uprisings and riots, while the Dalai refutes such accusations. The Dalai Lama is viewed with the respect of a religious leader to the outside world(western I spose..) and an evil rebel outcast by China. I have no idea who is right. There isn’t really proof(that I can find) about the Dalai’s supposed actions.

Supposed human rights abuse of people. Detainment of peaceful monks or something that started the riots.

Continued accusations of human rights against china, detainment of political dissidents w/o regard to international or personal law. Increased information security, still hiding a lot about past. Tian An Men for example. China has rebutted against u.s. rights abuse as well, something about health insurance.

Recent hacking attempts at Google and other companies. Who are the hackers? Supposedly they originated from China but there was something about Taiwan as well, not sure who they really were. Attack prompts Google to declare discontinuing of search censors on google.cn. Talks were under way, currently “99.9% certain” to pull out. Will this affect the regular google that can be accessed in china? Or just the google.cn that gives primarily chinese results. Researcher and intellectuals in china have said that researching w/o google would be like w/o electricity, why? Is there a large difference between the results from google and baidu?

44 point something billions worth of weapons sale to taiwan from u.s. Meeting with Dalai for…religious reasons?

Chian bans a famous Australian author with aids from an international literary convention held in china. Response to letting Dalai in Australia?

World anticipates 2008 Beijing Olympics, opening ceremony was rather successful. Prior to this relationships have been improving.

After the Tibetan riots there was a clamp on the media and information and things have started going downhill from there I suppose…But the years are all mixed up in my head and I think I’m missing a lot of information.

IMO China does not want to concede to the West. There was a statement somewhere about how U.S. actions have been more antagonistic to China because the previous method of being nice was “just not working”. That’s just hypocritical…it’s like trying to train your dog w/ a treat and then using a stick when that’s not working.

The things is most people have NO IDEA how to relate to other people. When we meet someone who’s speeding or cuts in line or does something rude, we automatically assume that person is a bad person. Even though it could’ve been the exception and not the rule. When we ourselves become the exception we rationalize away our negative views. When you mix in different culture and background everything just gets mushed up. The Iran U.S. embassy hostage things is an example, the Iranians(word?) have had a negative view on the u.s. for a while since their special ops removed their democratically elected leader and replaced him and some other stuff. But to the u.s. a bunch of middle eastern savages just randomly decided to take “us” hostage. Everything is polarized to “us” and “them”. When someone pinches us we poke em in the eye. Thinking an unfair retaliation we scratch back, punches follow and a fight ensues. We always believe that the pain we receive is more than the actual so when we “repay” that perceived wrong we over retaliate. That’s how simple things escalate to war. (don’t quote me on any of this..)

For example, the majority of chinese people WANT the government to censor for them. At least according to surveys, why? Because the majority of people don’t know how to use the internet. They have children and they know about violence and pornography and the internet is just weird to them, and unsafe. It’s like how parents blame video games for violence even though there isn’t really a correlation…(only exceptional cases broad-casted over the country thus changing non existent pseudo correlation into cause and effect)

And most PEOPLE wouldn’t care to divulge all their secrets of past wrongdoings, let alone government bodies m

Dog Care Expert answers:

The Chinese are destined to become the next superpower and the Chinese government is fully aware of it. They buy our bonds and make sure that their Yuan is in sync with the American Dollar, so that their goods and services will appear to be inexpensive for the Americans.
And in return America makes sure that the Walmart stores are chock full of “Made In China” goods. Does Walmart or Target actually sell anything, besides food, that isn’t made in China? And the American government does absolutely nothing about the massive trade imbalance between China and America.

And then the Chinese get ticked off for America selling weapons to Taiwan and supporting Tibet and the Dalai Lama. But they sell weapons to Iran and other enemies of the States, despite America’s protest. So why are the Chinese any better? Human rights is something the Chinese government doesn’t know much about. The value of a human life, especially Hans Chinese, is nil to the Chinese government. But then again does America know anything about human rights? America has lots of money to send as aid to whatever country needs it or to bailout the banks, AIG, and the auto-worker unions. America does pitiful little to help its own people stuggling through this awful recession.

Betty asks…

What’s the purpose of an Aussiedor?

Ive been googling away today, trying to get info on the cocker spaniel having biting tendencies as per another question last night. (i own one). Now, I know how many backyard breeders are turning out designer dogs at the moment and i only have support for the ‘Australian Labradoodle’, which is a dog in development in australia under government guidance by the Australian Guidedog Association, to provide guidedogs for allergy sufferers. Even after 30 yrs of cross breeding 8 different dog types, the research is still only beginning. this has unfortunatly led to back yard breeders crossing poodles with just about anything in a false claim of hyper-allergenic dogs. But I came across a ‘breeders’ website who ‘specialises’ in aussiedors. A cross between an Australian Shepherd and a labrador. Now, anyone who has ever visited a pound will have come across at least one German Shepherd Lab cross and a few collie lab cross. Why oh why would anyone purposefully cross these two dogs, and what stupid people would pay £100′s for one? Im amazed!!!
Then I come across a man who’s next door neighbours dog broke through the fence to his dog, resulting in golden x lab pups. He’s giving the pups for free to vetted homes, with puppy packs, at 12 weeks, fully vetted and health checked, shots etc, 6 months free pet insurance, and has the cert on show that the dad has now been neutered, and the mum will be spayed on recovery. Okay they made a mistake but at least took responsibility for it, at alot of cost. Another page shows ‘Goldendor Retrievers’ for sale $400? Arrrgghh, making me angry!!!! lol. Soz, had to rant. If they are going to build websites, put all this work in then why cant they breed responsibly for fecks sake??
Why oh why would anyone pay £450 for an australian shepherd x lab? why?

Dog Care Expert answers:

I would guess that the (dumb) purpose of an “Aussiedor” is to get a dog that looks like an Aussie but has the temperament of a Lab – because while Aussies are beautiful dogs, they are unsuitable for 99% of homes.

It’s really, REALLY stupid though. Lab looks tend to be dominant in mixes, and the idea of a Retriever that also herds makes me feel a little ill.

What really gets me are the “Goldadors.” What purpose does crossing two retrievers serve? They’re practically the same breed already! That’s like crossing, I dunno, English Setters and Springer Spaniels. Or Kuvasz and Great Pyrenees. Or Old English Sheepdogs and Polish Lowland Sheepdogs. You get the idea.

And don’t even get me started on intentionally crossing the companion breeds, which already serve no purpose!

I really don’t get it. People who want particular traits in a dog – or desire to confer “status” upon themselves – can buy a purebred. People who just want a cute pet can find one in a shelter for nominal cost. Why would you fork over a ton of your hard earned money for a mutt puppy no better than the dozens on death row at the pound down the road?
